COVID-19

Tracking American Perspectives

Updated July 29, 2020

The spread of COVID-19 is rapidly changing the lives of billions of people around the world. As the number of cases rose in the United States, the Democracy Fund + UCLA Nationscape survey expanded to better understand how the outbreak is influencing the lives and perspectives of Americans. We update this page regularly with the latest data.

How Concerned Are Americans?

COVID-19 is a concern for the greater majority of Americans. While there had initially been a high level of consensus between the various parties, a gap grew such that Republicans were much less likely than Democrats to express their concern. In recent weeks, however, concern among Republicans and Independents has begun to increase once again.

Do Americans Approve of President Trump's Response?

At present, the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States is shaping up to be one of the most economically and socially disruptive events in living memory. While initially more positive, more Americans now disapprove of the president’s handling of the COVID-19 outbreak.

There are large partisan differences in how the president’s actions are perceived. While Republican approval remains high, far fewer Independents and Democrats approve of the president’s handling of the outbreak.

Do Americans Agree With State and Local Actions?

The majority of Americans continue to support the measures taken by state and local governments in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the strength of this support has dwindled over time. Strong bipartisan consensus remains for the most actionable preventative measures, such as working from home and temperature checks in public places. Other measures that restrict personal choice, such as the restriction of non-essential travel away from home, have larger divergences of opinion between Democrats and Republicans.

Are Americans Adhering to Social Distancing Guidelines?

As Americans have grown more cognizant of the pandemic, many have adjusted their usual habits to minimize the risk of contracting or spreading COVID-19. When thinking about the past week, the majority of Americans say they have worn a mask and socialized with people they don’t live with while observing social distancing rules. However, a significant number of Americans report socializing with people they don’t live with while not observing social distancing rules.

Overall, partisan differences are relatively small but are largest when it comes to leaving the house for non-essential good and services.
